Laura and Alex Kasman are the owners of Square Root Farm in Denmark SC.
As they near retirement from their non-agricultural jobs, they would like to do
some farming. So, they purchased this property with over 20 acres of field that has been farmed since at least the 1980s where they hope to grow vegetables sustainably
and raise animals humanely. At this point, they are still learning how to achieve those goals and also still working full-time at their jobs in Charleston.
They are growing vegetables and have eight chickens. That generates more produce and eggs than they can eat themselves, but they do not quite feel that they are really farmers yet. (Still working on it!) It is their hope that they will find other like-minded individuals who want to work together towards these goals as part of a farmer's cooperative. The details have not yet been worked out, but the goal would be to find a way to share labor, support, equipment, expenses, risks, and rewards in a way that is fair to everyone involved. (Click on the "Partner" tab above for more information about this idea.) The house that was built on the property was designed with these goals in mind. In particular, the entire downstairs of the house is intended to be common workspace for farmers in the cooperative. All of the private living space is on the second floor of the house. | | |
